My Primary has it done in his office, sends the blood next door to the hospital lab. And Not 1 blown vein. his nurse listens when you say this is the most viable veins. Never feel the needle go in either. And I tell her she did great. I've had a lot of hospital nurses blow veins, punctured 2, with a short tiny needle like my Humalog comes with. At 76 I know which veins work, roll or to small to use.

Well, for once I can say that things have not become that bad in Australia. Most of the big medical clinics have their own pathology staff, who take blood or urine etc and send it off for analysis. i presume they are qualified in some way and they are pretty permanent - not much staff turnover, so I know which ones to go to in order to avoid bruising. Where the clinics don't have their own pathology rooms, there is normally a walk in pathology nearby. I have been able to get blood tests done on the day the doctor ordered them and they are usually returned in 2-3 days. The delay if there is any is if the doctor is overbooked and so cannot review the results for a few days or a week or two.

It is all also bulk billed so we never see an invoice and never have to pay anything, but there are moves afoot to degrade that system.

I like to complain about the state of allopathic medicine in Australia, but in this case we seem to be faring well, at least compared to the NHS.

Phlebotomists in the UK aren't licensed? That's odd. Are Radiology Techs licensed?

In the states, people who draw blood have to be licensed and most of them can draw blood out of any vein, and apologize when they mess up.

Can it be that UK physicians are lazy because they can't be fired and patients don't have a choice?
