This reminds me of the time 50 or so years ago when working in an international organisation with Czech and Yugoslav colleagues. The tension and excitement at the time ice hockey matches against the CCCP was incredible. And when their countrymen won we all celebrated - it meant so much to them.

Indeed. Thank you for the memory and link to watch it again.

I didn't care much about hockey then. I still don't. What I do care about is that George Washington is no longer celebrated (at least officially). He was our first President, and our first Commander in Chief. He was the acknowledged leader of that time. That is why he is often referred to as the Father of the country. We also no longer celebrate Abraham Lincoln's birthday. Historically, he may be the second most important president (to my Southern friends, your disagreement is accepted). Why we no longer celebrate these men's birthdays I really don't know. Too many holidays in a short month, with Ground Hog Day and Valentine's Day? George and Abe were relegated to being lumped into a Presidents Day celebration, although some presidents don't deserve to be celebrated. I'm for bringing back Washington's Birthday. Anybody else want to see Washington officially celebrated again?
