When are people going to realize that taxing Americans with tariffs (it's always the consumer who pays for tariffs) will only by some miracle, restore American manufacturing? The US has very limited amounts of raw materials for manufacturing (most of it is coal, which is a no-no these days), and needs imports...

Thank you Mr. Allen for an insightful article. The above excerpt should be chiseled in granite and placed in front of the Treasury Department, Commerce Department, and the Capitol.

Like Harley Davidson? :)

Manufactured in China, assembled in the US... Or Volkswagens?

The US doesn't have the raw materials...

I remember my ‘85 Softail. Wheels made in Australia, pistons made in Germany (Mahle), and on and on. Or my 93 Ducati, 907ie, only the starter motor was made in Japan (& headlight lens), it has Magnetti Marelli fuel injection, best bike I ever has.

My 1980 VW Rabbit (got it all rusted up as a present, when I was a student from a private student of mine who appreciated my work) was made (assembled only?) in Canada. :)

My 1980 BMW R100 had the bolts, nuts, and washers stamped "Made in West Germany". All of 'em. Everything else but the horns (Fiamme-Italian) was produced in Germany. That's what strong unions can do for a country. I used to laugh when Harley riders would brag about their "American" motorcycle. Unless it's a panhead or earlier....

What we're seeing now in the EU is what "timid woke commies" can do for a country.

I'm a hopeless Duck fan as well, got three of mine and one of my son's bikes here now. I prefer my '07 S4RS for cities, '04 ST4s for touring.

I feel large twin-cylinder motorbikes are all classics in-waiting.

I had a R-1100 RS (1991) which was a brilliant motorcycle. Never a moments trouble. Great stablemate to the Duck (93 907ie).

Free Trade policy is the single biggest FUCK UP in the history of The Republic of The United States of America. Only TRAITORS could come up with such fucked up policy. It's not just TREASONOUS, it's also dumb as FUCK. Who in their right mind would VOTE to FEED their FUCKING MORTAL ENEMIES FOR PROFIT AT THE EXPENSE OF THE PEOPLE THEY REPRESENT??? The 106th & 107th CON-GRESS. That's who. Many of these FUCK UPS remain in CON-GRESS to this very day. State by State, The American People now have a DUTY to EJECT every TRAITOR SHIT BAG who put our children and Grandchildren at risk by SELLING Their OPPORTUNITIES from under them. It is our DUTY to identify (Read at Congress.gov) every s9ngle Piece Of Shit TRAOTOR who remains in Con-gress who either voted in favor of or Confones Free Trade with America's Enemies and Charge each with TREASON as a CLASS ACTION and TRY, CONVICT and Publically EXECUTE each Traitor Criminal accordingly. #DefundTyranny #DepopulateTheDepopulators #MakeTreasonPunishableByDeathAgain #FreedomIsNotFree #EndFreeTrade

It would be nice to be self-sufficient, which the US is not, which keeps me wondering where the raw materials for domestic manufacturing will come from...

erican policymakers—both Democrats and Republicans—have tolerated a grotesquely asymmetrical global trade regime that has hollowed out the American industrial base and made us dangerously dependent on foreign powers, friend and foe alike.

That was never more apparent than during the stupid lockdowns. Toilet paper, medical gowns and masks, and even drugs were in short supply because we have them made in China. China worked in their own self interest and kept the supplies they needed, even going so far as to buy supplies up in Australia.

The larger context is even more damning. The United States no longer makes what it needs. We’ve offshored our factories, outsourced our supply chains, and surrendered our economy's core sectors to competitors and adversaries.

No damned shit. We don't make a damned shit anymore. How can you have a Gross Domestic Product when you don't have products? It might as well be Gross domestic Spending.

But growth driven by consumption, financed by debt, and fueled by foreign production is a Ponzi scheme disguised as prosperity. America’s so-called “consumer-driven” economy is now a treadmill of imports: we buy goods made elsewhere, pay with borrowed dollars, and watch foreign shareholders and governments reap the profits.

Exactly!

Even our technology sector hailed as the last bastion of innovation, relies on overseas fabrication and cloud infrastructure that escapes U.S. taxation and labor costs.

It's a shame. Texas Instruments used to be the manufacturer of choice. Like I said, we don't make, we just spend.

Sound economic doctrine must do more than chant “free trade” like early medieval plainsong. It must distinguish between open markets and open veins. It must recognize national sovereignty, security, and self-sufficiency as the flying buttresses of national survival. And it must be willing to act—not merely theorize—when the global trade regime becomes a conduit for exploitation and decline.

To hell with the rest of the world. We need to strengthen ourselves before we worry about everyone else.

For fun, here is a joke about obsessive behavior:

This guy is there in the desert for weeks. His only companion is a camel. His libido is too much for his age, and he starts considering the camel. It takes him weeks, but eventually, he makes friends with the idea, so he pulls his pants down and stands behind the camel. The camel steps aside. Again, he walks behind the camel, but the camel walks a little bit away. This keeps going on for months. Finally, a gorgeous white blond (according to worldwide inquiries, those are the most attractive for all races, but it’s probably enough to ask the Swedish or the Germans about their experience with “fugitives” since 2015) shows up, stark naked. She puts her arm around our man and says,

“I’ll fulfill all your wishes. What do you want?”

The man’s response is,

“Hold that camel!”

When just about everything in the US is a cartel or a monopoly (no matter how lousy the product is), it's hard not to realize that the whole world is controlled by globalist interests. Come on, even before the tariffs, it cost about 10 grands to get your own can over the border from Canada, if you settled in the US, because the "import" had to go through "official channels."

The tariffs can mean a number of things:

https://rayhorvaththesource.substack.com/p/import-tariffs-mean-several-things

The rest is naught but hidden taxation of Americans:
