Every year thousands of birds who are only a few months old manage to fly hundreds of miles in order to spend the winter in a warmer country. They fly without maps and without any artificial navigational aids. They fly across the oceans where there are no landmarks. And yet they invariably reach their destinations safely. Then, as the seasons change once more, they fly all the way back again. Similarly, newspapers often contain stories about family pets which have got lost but which have, nevertheless, managed to travel long distances in order to find their way back home.
No one seems to know precisely how birds and animals manage to navigate so accurately, but most scientists now argue that birds use some sort of inbuilt compass to help them follow the earth’s magnetic fields.
Since creatures which most of us regard as less intelligent than ourselves seem to be able to navigate very well without instruments, might we assume that, although most of us have lost the knack, we too have some sort of inbuilt system which is designed to help us find our way around the world?
The evidence suggests so. Most dramatic of all was the work done by a British researcher. Working with students whom he blindfolded, Dr Robin Baker of Manchester showed not only that they were able to point their way back to their starting point, even when they had been taken on a confusing and deliberately circuitous route, but that they were unable to do this with magnetic-field-inducing coils on their heads.
Not that this startling experiment would have been much of a surprise for one of the world’s greatest explorers. Captain Cook, the famous British sea captain and explorer, took a Polynesian with him on at least one of his journeys: according to Cook the man could always point accurately towards his own home island without any obvious external aids.
If you haven’t read my article entitled `More heartfelt thoughts on Gaza’ please read it now. If you have read it, please read it again. And ask everyone you know to read it.
I have difficulty in putting into words the way I feel about what is happening to the innocents in Gaza. Israel is no longer attacking Hamas. Instead, Israel is killing babies and children in what appears to be an awful, blood thirsty and savage revenge. Perhaps the plan is to kill every potential future enemy. If that is the case then the slaughter will continue for years.
I am appalled by the way the American Government is refusing to criticise, or even question, Israel’s blatant war crimes. If deliberately bombing hospitals, churches, mosques, houses and a refugee camp isn’t a war crime then we have to assume that there are NO rules. The Israeli Government now appears to be deliberately targeting the innocents in the same way that Genghis Khan once did.
The doctors and nurses (many of them working with Medicine Sans Frontier) have my respect and admiration. It is embarrassing to compare them with the well-paid doctors working in Britain’s NHS where GPs work just over 20 hours a week and hospital doctors have been on strike for a 35% pay rise. The doctors in Gaza, working in intolerable conditions that would have doubtless resulted in British doctors going on strike, have revived my faltering faith in the medical profession.
Horrific stories. My father went through the same thing (Detroit, MI USA, year 2002 or so) and though he sucessfully got himself off them, it was only through the intervention of my elder siblings. Dad had no idea what he had been prescribed, he dutifully took it. He had gone to a new doctor who seemed to want to kill him, to euthanize him, when in the end he was suffering depression after Mom died. He remarried eventually and had another decade of good life before he passed.
I heard we have a nationwide shortage of Ativan currently. The mental health assistance in the USA is appalling. Almost every patient has anxiety now.,We're a drug addicted society. My own brother is dying from the combo of methadone and benzos. It's a disheartening mess.
Ativan, or lorazepam (generic), it used to be dirt cheap, I hated those little bottles they used to ship the 0.5mg dosages in, preferred them to the 1000's for some stupid reason.
Remember clorazepate, 7.5mg in particular, a new girl (who got a pharmacy degree) was ordering and accidentally ordered 11X500 and when they came in it was at the old price, $5.95 a bottle, but it went to $599.95 a bottle overnight the next night. My boss thought I was a genius (I took 6 bottles to him) and even got a visit from the DEA.
Yea! Once you got them hooked they will pay anything to keep the addiction going and not go through withdrawal! Early 90’s Ciba’s Ritalin would not be available for shipping towards the end of the year because they were limited in
Production via DEA commitment! Their marketing push to physicians was A+! They changed their name to Novartis because they were being seen in a bad light! 30 years later the crap is still being marketed because FDA is brain dead!
There are people who need these meds regularly, those that have seizures for instance, but for the rest of us, they are addicting beyond any good purpose. I have to admit, this is one of the drugs I never abused, I just didn't consider it worth the risk.
Show me the Way to Go Home

Good deal, I'm glad he was able to overcome it (with help from family).
Thanks for telling us a good story, Jacquelyn, thanks a lot.
Big Pharma just loves selling additive drugs for profit. Has nothing to do about helping the patient get well!
No they don't, for instance all the school shootings. They could end this but it would mean giving up their SSRIs, and the billions that go with them.

These meds are a crutch … addressing your mind body and spirit with good diet/ exercise and a great attitude goes a long way IMO .

Yes so agree 🌻
