Very good explanation of where we came from and where we are. I wonder why so many resist Trumps plan when it can only benefit them and their future? His tenacity and persistence thru much ignorance is commendable. Everyone needs to wake up and watch how our new leader works to MAGA. It’s exactly that and they need to stop complaining and resisting and enjoy the process to achieve a better life. Where we were heading especially the last 4 years was degrading and literally ruining our great country, the freedoms so many patriots fought for. When people became lazy they pushed our lives way down. For now I’m enjoying the ride back to the America I grew up in. Simple and hopeful. That’s what I remember……

"All governments which thwart this natural course, which force things into another channel, or which endeavour to arrest the progress of society at a particular point, are unnatural..."
Great article! Adam Smith really knew what government is in the here and now... and what a decent government would do.. Everybody is so impressed with money...to the exclusion of anything else. We were not born to waste our whole lives working to pay off the things we buy...which usually wind up the landfill.
People have to focus on their own talents and abilities, which will create the means to pay for what they NEED. It says in the Bible that our NEEDS will be met; not our WANTS!...
You're correct Barbara. I am retired and have been trying to declutter and "get rid of stuff." My children don't want my stuff, they don't want my old photos, they don't care about my light houses that I kept when my mom passed away, etc. and so on. Here in Florida there are resale shops all over the place to sell the estates of the deceased. Everything the children didn't want. I'm hoping that by the time I pass away there won't be anything the kids don't want around. If I don't love it, it can go. If it has no special meaning it can go. If I don't use it it can go. I'm breaking the habit of buying things because it's a bargain or sale. If I can't use it, I don't buy it. It's a hard habit to break. My home is by no means a hoarder house, but after 67 years we accumulate things. Every month I take boxes to charity and every so often I put items in the boxes. I still have a lot.of stuff. Maybe by age 80 I'll be done! Lol
The main thing I collect are books. I have a library...and have given away boxes and boxes of books. My daughter got rid of almost everything I had for years., except my
bedroom furniture, office filing cabinets and bookcases. I really decluttered...so my shopaholic daughter could fill every nook and cranny in our new home.. until there is no more room...
I read books and give them away, unless it is autographed by the author. Those I keep. My son will like and keep them. Being a shopaholic is definitely a problem. Not the least is the clutter and the money spent that probably can't be afforded.
Excellent, top notch article, thank you! This was very thought-provoking and goes straight to the heart of how we got to where we are now. Back in 1977, when I left my parent's home and went out into the world on my own, I moved to San Francisco. I found a job and an apartment within 2 days. I paid rent plus $12/month for telephone. That was it, didn't have medical insurance or car insurance. My rent was $150 for a very nice apartment. Life was much simpler back then.
Excellent article, and it's true we are slaves to our desires. Brings to mind Michael Stipe singing in Finest Worksong, "What we want, and what we need, has been confused, been confuse."
The problem is debt. The government(s) is in debt. The people are in debt. We are now getting a real look at part of the reason the government is in debt. The main cause is the Federal Reserve, the FED. Having private bankers run the nation is a very bad idea. The other part is the people's debt. We always want more and better. So we buy whatever is thrown in front of us as bigger and better. We can't pay for stuff outright, so we borrow. The only money being made is by the large corporations and the banks. We are a debtor nation and we can't break out of the cycle. Year by year the money we make purchases less. Now we have unpayable debt (+36 trillion for the US) and money that is becoming valueless. Eventually, and sooner than we would like to think about, the whole financial scheme will crash. At this point, there is probably no way to stop the collapse. Buckle up because the road ahead will become very rocky. The best fall back is to buy gold, silver and other commodities if you can. Stocks, bonds and fake money will be worth nothing.

Well said, AMV.

So true.

Execellent. I didn't have a dishwasher till I was 60. Unless my boys were bad as boys, that was their punishment.
Good article .
Thanks for the restack, Gbill7.
