Most people in the past were illiterate, except those who were royalty or were wealthy and had money to pay scholars to tutor their sons. Many people were superstitious and others were literate. Education was not all that valid; and many had narrow viewpoints. Many were malnourished or alcoholics...and did not think clearly. There's many a slip twixt the cup and the lip...and much fiction about the past abounds. Education for the masses is a very recent undertaking. Many in the world still can't read or write.
