I think a lot of this comes down to the downsides of having expert classes of people and the current way we fund scientific research. What is the best way to get funding for research? Well, you need an impending disaster. And when you are a highly specialized expert, your area of expertise seems to be the most important thing. People who study things like fertility think endocrine disrupters are the biggest danger. Climate scientists think the climate is the biggest danger. Virologists think some yet-to-evolve virus is the biggest danger. In the case of virologist, they actually thought it was a good idea to research covid virus gain of function (ostensibly so we could prevent the next SARS or worse). In the case of climate scientists, they actually believe that getting CO2 down to the line of death is a good idea. These ideas are so stupid only an expert could believe them.
